Streamlining Excellence at Specialty Plumbing Supplies

The Heritage of Quality

Founded in 1988 by Ray Chapman, Specialty Plumbing Supplies (SPS) began as a modest family operation run out of a residential garage in Sydney. Initially focused on importing cast iron roof and floor drains, the company built a reputation for reliability. As the demand for stainless steel lineal grates surged, the business transitioned from importing to utilising interstate manufacturers. However, to truly control their destiny and quality, Director Tony Chapman made a pivotal decision eight years ago: it was time to bring manufacturing home.

The Evolution of Production

SPS expanded into a new facility in Greenacre, initially equipped with traditional manual tools, guillotines, hydraulic drills, and TIG welders. While this allowed for in-house production, the limitations of manual labor soon became apparent. With a growing client base including industry giants like Reece and Tradelink, and major contracts for landmark projects like the Sydney Fish Markets and Shoalhaven Hospital, the manual process struggled to keep pace.

National Sales Manager Matt Dawson faced a classic manufacturing dilemma: hire more scarce, expensive skilled labor or innovate. "It’s a difficult environment to find skills," Matt notes.

"We were looking at hiring a third fabricator or investing in technology to bridge the gap."

Why SPS Chose Koenig Machinery

After seeing a G Weike LF3015P Pro in action at one of their customer’s factory, the SPS team was impressed by its compact footprint and immense power. The reputation of the service provided by Koenig Machinery didn’t go astray either.

Their journey to Fiber laser technology then formally started at the AMW 2025 show in Melbourne. The decision to partner with Koenig was driven by more than just the machine’s specs; it was about the partnership. Unlike other suppliers in the market who provide stagnant service, Koenig offered a comprehensive package, including a Fiber Laser Welder, backed by a support system that Matt describes as an "absolute godsend."

A Transformation in Results

Since the installation in May 2025, the transformation has been nothing short of revolutionary. By integrating CAD macros with their new Fiber Laser, SPS has seen a 75% reduction in production time.

  • Efficiency: A 2.5m lineal grate that once took 45 minutes of intensive manual labor now takes just 10 minutes from drawing to finished, welded product
  • Labor Savings: The machine has almost paid for itself in just six months, saving approximately $50,000 in labour costs.
  • Waste Reduction: By processing offcuts in-house for custom components, SPS saves an additional $30,000 per year that was previously spent on outsourcing.

Looking Ahead

Today, SPS operates across four locations with a streamlined team of ten. By choosing Koenig Machinery, Specialty Plumbing Supplies didn't just buy a machine; they insulated their business against labour shortages and skyrocketed their productivity.

"The process is fast, the skills gap is bridged, and the ROI is undeniable."
