From Hobby to High-Performance Fabrication
What starts as a side project doesn’t often scale into a high-output manufacturing operation—but for Maker Supplies, it did. Driven by a systems-first mindset and a focus on efficiency, Jesse Sumner transformed a small-scale setup into a streamlined production workshop. This case study explores how the right machinery, backed by local support, helped unlock higher precision, reduced labour, and accelerated growth at every stage.
Business Background
Jesse Sumner didn’t follow the traditional path into steel fabrication. With a background in high-level IT project management and fibre optic networks, Jesse’s approach to manufacturing is built on data and system efficiency rather than "the way it’s always been done."
What started as a hobby on a 5-acre property in Mount Barker, South Australia, quickly evolved into Maker Supplies. In 2023, Jesse transitioned his part-time hobby into a professional business. Today, Maker Supplies, boasting a team of 6 professional team members, is a high-volume workshop specialising in intricate decorative steel, custom components, and high-end fabrication for the Australian market.
Challenges Faced
The business hit a ceiling early on with entry-level equipment. Jesse started with a CNC plasma cutter, but the limitations were immediate. The plasma process resulted in poorly optimised steel sheet with only 40-50% utilisation, due to larger part gaps, larger pierce and lead-lines and managing heat in the material.
For a business that found itself specialising in intricate, high-end and detailed work, the plasma was quickly becoming the wrong tool for the job. As the business scaled, a new bottleneck emerged in the finishing department. The team was spending between 16 and 20 hours every week manually deburring and polishing parts by hand. This wasn't just a labour cost issue; it was a safety and consistency problem that threatened to stall the company’s rapid growth.
Solution Exploration
Coming from an IT background, Jesse understood that the cheapest machine is often the most expensive in the long run if it lacks support.
He needed a "stable partner" rather than just a hardware vendor. After researching the market, Jesse worked closely with the team at Koenig Machinery to build a complete production ecosystem over the last few years.
The solution started with a CO2 Laser (K1309) for versatile engraving, followed by the G Weike LF1325 Fibre Laser Cutter and the 20DHY 20 Bar Scroll Compressor to eliminate the need for expensive gas packs. To solve the finishing crisis, Koenig most recently installed the B1000 Linishing Machine. Also, part of the solution is the LCW1500 Fiber Laser Welder, to replace traditional, slower welding methods and a K50FMO Fiber Marking Machine.
Why Koenig Machinery
For Jesse, the deciding factor wasn't just the spec sheet—it was the local Australian infrastructure. "The biggest fear is having a machine go down and being told parts are two months away," Jesse noted. Koenig Machinery removed that risk by holding a comprehensive local parts inventory and providing direct access to skilled, local technicians.
The ability to pick up the phone and speak to someone who understands the machine’s history—and can be on-site quickly—gave Maker Supplies the confidence to invest. Koenig’s consultative approach meant Jesse wasn't just sold a machine; he was provided with a technical roadmap that supported his transition from a hobby start-up into full-scale manufacturing.
Results & Satisfaction
The impact of the Koenig ecosystem was immediate and measurable. The B1000 Linishing Machine turned 16 hours of gruelling manual labour into a streamlined 30-minute process, essentially giving the business two full days of production back every week.
The LF1325 Fibre Laser slashed material waste and allowed for a level of detail that the old plasma cutter couldn't touch. Jesse views these machines as appreciating assets that "make money while you sleep." With plans to expand to a second high capacity exchange table laser and new CNC press brakes, Jesse continues to partner with Koenig Machinery for their reliability, local service, and professional support that keeps his workshop humming.
